AGON, Competition, Striving, Struggle, Earnestly

Jude 3

“Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people”

Agon: to contend earnestly, strive, or fight for

Agon: to contend earnestly, strive, or fight for

Are you “earnestly contending” for the faith or are you just coasting through your life and ministry?

Today we continue to contemplate the biblical lessons based on the Greek word Agon... an athletic Greek term that was rooted in the concept of the efforts athletes need to exert when they “contend” in a race.

Jude, the half-brother of Jesus wrote to 1st century Christians, urging them to “contend earnestly” for the faith. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Jude used the specific word ago’n to communicate that followers of his half-brother needed to approach how they lived out their faith with the same zeal, effort and commitment that ancient Greco-Roman athletes exhibited when they pursued their athletic goals.

You know the effort that is needed to be successful athletically, now I urge you engage in that same kind of effort to grow and mature in your efforts to follow Jesus.

Action point: resolutely determine today that you will exert the same level of effort needed to be a successful athlete into “earnestly contending” for your faith!
