INSTANT REPLAY: THE SECOND LOOK

Coach Todd James
September 18, 2026

Todd James, Basketball, Forgiveness, Christian Living

Philippians 3:13-14

"No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us."

Forgiveness

Forgiveness

I don't remember doing it as a player, but I do when I was coaching. Hours after the game ended and I was laying in bed I would replay the game over and over thinking, "Why didn't I do this instead of that?"

But no matter how many times I replayed the game it always came out the same. I think I was waiting for us to win on the replay, but we never did!

Coaches aren't the only ones who have to contend with mental replays of their mistakes and losses. Every person who gets into the game of life soon discovers that the bitter memories of mistakes are about as bad as failure itself.

Here are some suggestions to help you get through those sleepless nights when those mistakes keep playing in your mind over and over:

THE REMEDY

First, Learn from your mistake. If you do you won't make the same mistake again, which might lead to victory tomorrow.

Second, Forgive yourself. You can't do anything about it, it's done, so stop punishing yourself and move on.

Third, Forgive your teammates, or those who might have caused the mistake. You can't do anything about the past, forgive them and encourage them to get back into the game, doing their best.

Fourth, quit looking back and start looking forward to the next play or next game. Stop rehashing yesterday. Read Philippians 3:13,14.

Fifth, focus on what you did that was right. Concentrate on the good things and not about doing the bad things.

Sixth, forget the defeat. When God forgives your sins, He forgets them.

ASK YOURSELF

Do I keep replaying my mistakes? Have I learned from my mistakes? Have I forgiven myself?

REMEMBER

Erase you instant replay tape and get back in the game!

Dean Smith said this about mistakes: Recognise it, Admit it, Learn from it, Forget it!
