Brabeus is the Greek word for a judge or arbiter in the public games and it is the root word for three sports-related words found in the New Testament.

Now, just because the word for referee or umpire is in the Bible, this doesn’t mean referees will be in heaven…sorry, that was a poor attempt at humor, but I think it reveals one of the reasons we engage in this Daily Huddle devotional…we believe the Gospel of Jesus is for each and every person…each and every athlete, coach and yes, even sports officials…and thus, referees and umpires are to be honored, respected and…even loved!

So, for the remainder of this week, we will focus on the verses that include the words and spiritual lessons that emerge from the world of sports officials. We hope to encourage, challenge and inspire not only athletes and coaches but also all referees, umpires…and also to remind all sports ministers to not forget the opportunity they have to reach sports officials with the Gospel.
