Position: Director of Sports and Community Outreach Reports To: Missions Pastor Direct Reports: Sports Center Staff, coaches, referees, administrative support Job Type: Full time position Job Summary: To extend the mission of DBC through creation, oversight, development, and staffing of a culture of gospel witness through sports and community outreach. The Director of Sports and Community Outreach is an individual with a heart for making disciples to be a part of the DBC Missions team. During active sports seasons this position requires Saturday and evening onsite hours. Responsibilities and Job Duties: Focus Areas: The focus for the Director of Sports and Community Outreach role includes the following: Works with Missions Pastor to develop and implement a local community outreach strategy. Collaborate with DBC Ministers on ministry specific community outreach activities (i.e.: Walk Through Bethlehem, Trunk or Treat, Journey to Jerusalem) Sports Ministry as Community Outreach: Insure that sports programs are designed with reaching the community in mind, implemented with excellence, leaders are properly recruited, vetted and trained, and participants in leagues are followed up with and cared for. Incorporate new sports ministry opportunities that appeal to the community around DBC that is a major focus of outreach for the church and personally follow up individuals who express interest in continuing discipleship. Wellness Ministry as Community Outreach: Work closely with the Director of the Cecil B. Day Fitness Center to create a culture of “friendly and intentional evangelism” within the staff of the Fitness Center, suggest and implement outreach events through the Fitness Center, and personally follow up Fitness Center members who express interest in continuing discipleship. Oversee the Benevolence Ministry of DBC to assist the church in caring for people in need both inside the church and in the community and personally follow up individuals who express interest in continuing discipleship. Communications: Communicate sports and community outreach needs and opportunities to the church via social media, website, and print, working in concert with DBC’s communications coordinator and Missions Admin. Communicate the vision and strategy for sports ministry and outreach to the church and church leadership. Administrative: Participate as a fully integrated member of the DBC staff and attend monthly staff meetings. Work with the Missions Pastor in developing a sports and community outreach plan, budgeting and allocation of financial resources. Desired Education & Experience: The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic self-starter who possesses strong organizational skills. He or she will be a strong communicator who can cast vision, create culture, and develop strategies for sports, fitness and other community outreach. Experience working with individuals across diverse cultures and socio-economic circumstances is a significant plus. Required: A sense of calling from God to missions and serving the local church is essential. College degree required. Two or more years in sports ministry. Must have a strong working knowledge of MS Office programs, basic understanding of budgets, and be able to multi-task. Membership and active involvement at DBC required. Desired: Two or more years’ experience in one or more of these areas: administration, logistics, team leadership, or supervision. Seminary degree preferred. Perspectives on the World Christian movement certificate desired (if not, willingness to achieve soon after joining required). Chicago First Church of the Nazarene- Nazarene Recreation Nazarene Recreation has been a fixture in Lemont/Homer/Orland Park since the mid-1970’s. Tens of thousands of kids have put on their Naz Rec t-shirt and have played soccer, t-ball, basketball, and more on our fields and in our gyms. disciple-making ministry in the area of Sports and Recreation beginning inside our church and reaching out into our community. Key Areas of Responsibility: • Pray regularly for league directors, coaches, players and programs within sports ministry. • Recruit primarily First Friends volunteers, and secondarily community volunteers to coach and direct leagues in the Sports Ministry. Work to increase the involvement of First Friends volunteers and participants in Sports Ministry. • Give devotionals in large and small groups. • Responsible for the implementation of the vision, management and oversight of all sports leagues and administration to include cost planning work sheets, skill assessment, team formation, ordering jerseys, festival activities, scheduling, purchasing and distributing equipment, gifts, and awards. . • Incorporate other First Friends ministries into the Sports Ministry. • Develop a Sports Ministry Team that can serve, help provide vision and ideas for the overall Sports Ministry. • Administrate the budget for all areas of responsibility within sports and recreation ministries. • Help to recruit, supervise and manage Sports Ministry interns. • Keep current on First Aide certification, defibulator and all emergency procedures to include First Friends Crisis Management Plan. • Attend regular scheduled leadership meetings that would include: sports staff, ministry/all staff, and congregational meetings. • Work with the Director of Facilities to maintain and care for the gym, baseball fields and soccer fields. Qualifications • Maintain a regular presence at ministry activities and functions • Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills • Be able to work evenings and weekends • The ability to set up and tear down sports equipment in the Gym: chairs, bleachers and basketball goals. • Be able to lift 75 lbs. • Member of First Friends Church (or working toward) • Clean background check • Bachelor’s degree in related field. • Must be a Christian Personal and Spiritual Qualifications: • The greatest requirement for the Staff at First Friends is a strong personal commitment to Jesus Christ and a love for His church (Matt.22: 36-40).
