CSRM is pleased to announce Ryan Van Hoven has been added as an Associate Staff member. Van Hoven is a Sports Outreach veteran having served many years as the International Ministry Director of Uncharted Waters (UW). Ryan graduated from Liberty University with a Master Degree and took Sports Ministry courses from Dr. Greg Linville. Born and raised in a Christian home, Ryan came to faith in Jesus as a young child but experienced doubts about his faith and went through a spiritual depression at the age of 13. His faith journey came full circle as God brought him to a full understanding of what a real, personal relationship with Him looked like and shortly after, he felt called to full time ministry. God expanded his horizons through his undergraduate degree, where one of his majors was Cross Cultural Studies. God immediately allowed him to use this major through the International avenues of UW where he served for 5 years. More recently Ryan has worked as the Sales Manager at a wholesale greenhouse, which provides him with the financial resources he needs and yet enables him to have incredible flexibility to work on ministry oriented things. Van Hoven has a passion for assisting African leaders to reach their countries for Jesus and in his position as CSRM's East Africa Leadership Development Director, he is finding real fulfillment in his passion and calling. Ryan is also currently writing a book and raising money for the East African Leadership initiatives. Report on CSRM Cape Town, South Africa Sport Outreach Summit
Goal: Rebuild trust with churches and specially the youth/ future leaders around CSRM.
Concern: Many Sport Ministries in SA are not currently focused on keeping the local church as the foundation within sport ministry!
Objective: Introduce CSRM’s focus on “evangelistic-disciplemaking”
Strategy: CSRM Cape Town 2016 Sports Outreach Summit was specifically modeled to equip key leaders in and around Cape Town who will form the Hub church in their areas of influence. The 20 key ‘runners’ was challenged to also live out 2 Timothy 2:2 just as outlined for them.
Presenter: Bradley Barnes who lectured on foundation of CSRM, vision of CSRM, sports ministry, church and sports ministry, evangelism, discipleship, sports parables, building CSRM within church. An evangelist Darius Bekker from port Elizabeth who shared about practical ways to evangelize and share the gospel.
Highlight: Hearing from 13yr old Luke boldly who shared his own sports parable that he and his friends had learned from Bradley Barnes 3 years ago’
Certification: Each attendee received a certificate of completion for been dedicated throughout the theory & practical sessions of the Summit. Many travelled from afar & it was a mere appreciation towards them and our future CSRM family.
Another positive outcome of CSRM conference was the 98% attendees evaluation form feedback about conference & myself.
Results: The greatest impact the CSRM Sport Outreach Summit has was evidenced through the attendees expressed desire to grow more in Christ through special interest in the Christmanship book of theology, methodology & biblical understanding of all aspects of CSRM.
Including requesting Bradley Barnes to lecture on the entire book of christmanship!
Future Plans: A CSRM South Africa coastline Sports Outreach Summit to train in all 4 states/ provinces situated on our coastline in 2017.
Special Thanks: Special thanks to New Faith Steenberg campus which hosted the event including all catering, utilities and church facilities at no cost.
Many thanks to CSRM for resources, support from CSRM’s Director of International Initiatives – Jonathan Detweiler - and all the prayers from all CSRM staff & global GNP staff.
Above all: Paises to GOD!
Rev. Rob Burns
REACHgathering is pleased and honored to announce the third of four Plenary Speakers - Rob Burns - one of The Sports Outreach Movement's leading lights...
Rob Burns started his work life as a youth Soccer player with Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club in England. He then completed a B.A. in Sports Studies at Staffordshire University. After this he lectured for two years at Stafford Further Education College and played high level semi pro Soccer.
He moved to the USA in his mid twenties and played briefly for Houston Dynamos before founding and directing Youth Sports International (1989 – 1996), a Houston Soccer ministry that taught several hundred children and teenagers per week. Over a thousand became followers of Jesus.
On moving to the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex in 1996 to undertake a Masters of Divinity at South Western Seminary, he worked at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, setting up Highlander FC (1996 – 2000) another Soccer ministry which also taught several hundred children and teenagers per week. Several hundred became followers of Jesus. Jim Riley was Highland Park's Sports Minister at the time and described Burns as one of the most Spirit led evangelists that he had known.
During this time, Rob was actively involved with Wedgwood Baptist Church becoming an ordained Baptist Minister in 1999.
In 2000, Rob, his wife Jenny (a former British national team Sailor) and their 3 boys came to Wales as missionaries where they have worked for the last 17 years. For 10 years he was an International Mission Board missionary, focused on evangelism and developing disciples and leaders in Wales. During this time, Rob wrote a fully accredited, graduate Certificate in Christian Studies and Sports Ministry (St John’s Theological College, Nottingham) This was the first in the UK. He also partnered with ForMission College (York St John University) to develop and lead an M.A in Missional Leadership. Rob was the Wales Campus Leader and a regular tutor on this program.
For 8 years, Rob was on the leadership team, with responsibility for mission, at Glenwood Church in Cardiff and was Executive Director of VOCATE, a vocational development centre which initiated a range of apprentice and internship programs for 18 – 25’s, a consultancy program for 50 plus’s and a mentoring and volunteer programme for all ages. VOCATE was also a licensed Agored (Open College Network) Accreditation Centre.
During this time, Rob started and jointly developed a mission focused, 12 week leadership academy for 18-25’s (in collaboration with Message Wales) and a 1 year intern training Programme for 18-25’s.
Over the last 17 years, well over 250 people have been trained deeply through these reflective practice programmes. There have been interns and students from 3 continents but there has been a special involvement from the USA every year.
In addition, over the last 6 years, Rob has been working very closely with the Evangelical Alliance, Wales where he is team member, to develop long term, county wide relationships between Welsh and USA churches. Usually involving 1 Large USA church and multiple Welsh churches in a county, Missional Links Wales (www.missionallinkswales.org.uk) looks to place 1 week mission experiences, interns, missionaries, consultants and proven experts from the USA into Welsh counties, in order to catalyse partnership and missional impact.
As a perpetual learner, Rob has continued to study, gaining a post graduate certificate in Coaching for Leadership and an additional M.A. in Missional Leadership (finishing July 2017)
In other contexts in Wales and the USA, Rob consults with ministry leaders and local churches, acting as an encourager, trainer, leadership coach, strategist and missional consultant.
