1.
The CSRM Iron Sharpens Iron Series strategy is to equip local churches
to change the lives of runners and walkers by uniting all CSRM and
Eastern Region Churches in a 5k race series for the following purpose:
a. Mobilize local church members by providing an entire race season of
opportunities to build relationships with their un-churched friends and
family members as they race and train together
2. The CSRM Iron Sharpens Iron Series is designed to build and
strengthen local churches by enabling churches to incorporate an
exciting “big event” at their church which can unite and energize the
entire church in a strong outreach which can winsomely attract people
to get involved with other activities in the church.
3. The CSRM Iron Sharpens Iron series is designed to promote fitness
among men women and children of all ages through participation in
running and walking events to enhance their physical, mental, emotional
and most importantly…their spiritual well-being.
In the next five years the CSRM Iron Sharpens Iron Race series
ministries plans to expand to incorporate the entire state of Ohio
through the existing Eastern and Central Ohio Evangelical churches as
well as CSRM member churches. Beyond that we then want to take
this from state to state and possible country to country.
History of the CSRM Iron
Sharpens Iron Race Series
In 2010 Damascus Friends Church held a 5k race. It was called the
DFC Canyon Run Race because it traveled through the old Quaker Canyon
Church Camp. The race was a success. A few months later Bob
Owen (Sports Outreach Director of Damascus Friends Church) and I (Mark
Cosma) (DFC Canyon Run Race Director) attended the annual Church Sports
and Recreation Ministry (CSRM) Summit where they met with hundreds of
other Local Church Sports Outreach Ministers. While sitting
in a break out session on how to organize a 5K race a vision began to
emerge. The introductions revealed there were
representatives from over 30 states, Canada, a country in Africa, and
New Zealand. At that very moment God placed upon my (Mark
Cosma’s) heart a vision for an international Race Series for local
churches to use in calling people to Christ. Later the Summit had
a working lunch where regional CSRM connect groups met and this is when
I (Mark Cosma) suggested the idea for a race series to those in his
group. The idea was fully supported and it was decided to
organize such a venture. The following vision is in process…
1. DFC held the inaugural race October 2011
which announced the 2012 CSRM Iron Sharpens Iron Race Series
2. A planning committee was formed to plan the
race series. This committee was initially made up of people from
about a dozen churches.
3. This committee met throughout 2011 and is
currently planning the 2012 season
4. The long term vision is to see an additional
1-3 regions added each race season
The following verse really hits home for me.
1 Timothy 4:8 “Physical training is good, but training for Godliness is
much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”
(NLT)
A Local Church race series can actually accomplish this vision.
We can develop relationships where individuals will follow a Christian
race series and thus begin training, talking and hanging out together,
and we will develop Christian family values to build God’s Kingdom in
heaven. A win win situation!
