DEVOTIONALS & TRACTS

Adult League Devotions / Week 2

Week 2:
Redeemed
By Rich Green, Sports Minister at Mount Pleasant Christian Church (Greenwood, Indiana) and adapted from devotional writings from Stuart Weir.

God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself - 2 Corinthians 5:19

Just as sin affected everything negatively, so the death of Christ affects everything positively. If we believe that Jesus Christ died to restore our broken relationship with God, then that has implications for everything in our lives.

When we allow God to take control of our lives, when we surrender them to Him, all the broken things - from our lack of faith, to our relationships, to the frustrations thatcan come from playing sports - begin to be mended. God starts to address them and work inside us. He starts to deal with our lives as the Holy Spirit speaks to us through a word, through preaching, through friends.

As we pray and read the Bible, he challenges us about aspects of our lives which are not right. This applies to everything from our relationships to how we play against our opponents.

Grasping this truth about God as creator and redeemer must also affect our attitude to him. If he is the creator of all things, we have an inescapable obligation to worship him in all things and at all times - including sports.

The world of sport is permeated by sin but let us get involved as Christians, as men of “good character” and compete for The Lord. Let us work to redeem and restore the world of sports to the way God intended it was meant to be. Even if it’s only in our small corner of the world

Discussion Questions
  1. What are your thoughts on what you’ve just Read/Heard?
  2. What does it mean to “redeem” sports? And how can each of us play a part in that redemption?
  3. What’s the “Take-A-Way” for tonight?
